Cupolas

A well built cupola on the roof of your house or garage, or even on a garden shed can certainly enhance the structure’s appearance. Cupolas are also good places for weather vanes or birdhouses. When you are building a cupola, remember that it is easier to build it on the ground and then install it on the roof, unless it is a very large one. If the cupola size is large, it might be difficult to get up to the roof, so it might be necessary for you to build it up there. Always take full safety precautions when working on a roof. Here is an important point to consider when you have roofing and cupola construction. Before you install the cupola on the roof, attach nailers to the roof. Then attach the cupola to the nailers. That will prevent leaks.

If you are going to build a cupola, you will find all the materials you need at your local building supply centre. The centre will have cupola plans and possibly even cupola kits which will include woodworking plans for cupola construction. If you are buying materials, the centre might provide you with free cupola plans. Even if you get the cupola plans free, be sure you know exactly what kind of cupola you’re getting. There are, of course, numerous cupola designs. Be sure to select the one that is most suitable to your structure. Something that might look good on a Georgian house with cupola might not necessarily look good where you want to put one.
Before you start to build your cupola, you must determine the angles of your roof for the base of the cupola. You can do this without trying to compute the roof’s pitch. Just go up on the roof with two pieces of straight 1x2 and a C-clamp. Lay the 1x2s on the roof so they cross each other, and then clamp them tightly together. Now you have something that will give you an exact alignment for the base of your cupola.

Cut the side and end pieces and assemble them. Add the eaves. Then attach the siding. Make the roof and attach it, ensuring that the peak is in the middle. Now you can install your cupola on the roof.

If for some reason you cannot construct your own cupola, you can buy a prefabricated one. Stephenson Cupola is a company that manufactures cupolas. You can get a wood or a copper cupola. Stephenson manufactures cupolas for homes, carriage houses, barns and public buildings. For more information on cupolas go to cupola diy on the internet.
