Sheds are structures that are generally too small to be called buildings. They usually serve utilitarian purposes, such as storage sheds, a tool shed, a garden shed, a bicycle shed, and so on. You might use a shed to keep your barbeque in, and to keep things like pool supplies or a boat motor.

If you decide that you need a storage shed, or some other type of shed in your back yard, first check your community’s bylaws regarding such construction. Then decide just what you want your shed to look like. Some outdoor storage sheds are very imaginatively designed, and do not look like sheds at all. However, these little examples of clever architecture can be rather expensive. You can build a shed very inexpensively, and make one that will not look unattractive in your backyard.

Your local building supply centre will have all the materials you need to build your shed. They will also have shed plans that explain how to build a shed. Since you are buying the materials. The store might well provide you with free shed plans. You can also buy shed kits that include all the building pieces, as well as instructions. So whether you need storage shed plans or the material to build a couple of garden sheds, the centre will have it for you. If you are building a simple garden tool shed, make sure you can easily get all of your long handled tools in. If you are making a walk-in garden shed, or any other type of shed, you will want it large enough that you can walk inside, but not necessarily large enough to work in. You don’t necessarily need windows, though they do tend to make the shed a little more attractive. Head room can be kept to a minimum. Make sure you cover the roof with roofing felt or some other waterproof material. If you use plywood, your shed will need less framing. Do the outside with paint or a good preservative. The inside can be left bare, but it often looks better with a coat of a light coloured paint. Some shrubbery or potted plants around your shed will make it look more attractive.
